This retreat was okay overall. I did meet some new photographers and made a few Instagram friends, which was definitely a positive, and I got some decent content out of it as well.
I believe this was their first retreat, so I do want to give grace there. I also haven’t attended any of their other events since, so I can’t speak on whether things have improved over time. That said, the experience felt pretty lackluster and extremely overcrowded. At times there were 8–10 photographers around one couple, which made shooting really difficult, especially indoors where you were constantly trying to frame shots without other people in the background. Since then, I’ve definitely learned to ask how many photographers will be attending before booking retreats or content days.
For the price people paid, it felt like there should have been more intention and production value behind it. The models wore their own wardrobe, there was no HMUA, no vendor networking, and overall it just felt a bit thrown together. A strong retreat/content day usually feels curated and collaborative, and this one lacked a lot of those elements. Hiring models is great, but at that point it felt like something I could have organized myself for much less.
When you realize 10+ people likely invested $600-1000 each (day passes vs airbnb stay) and the only real deliverable was access to models, it did leave me feeling a little like, “Ahh… okay, this kind of just funded a trip for the hosts.”
That being said, Evan and Macayla themselves were very kind, personable people, and I genuinely enjoyed interacting with them. I just personally wouldn’t pay to attend another one of their retreats/content days again at this time.
